New arrivals at our home

Last Saturday, after attending our first childbirth preparation class, we visited the "Book Fair" in A Coruña. We couldn't resist not buying anything... there were so many things we liked ... but finally we decided to buy a series of books by Miroslav Sasek, "This is New York" and "This is Rome." (We selected these titles because certainly these are two of our favorite cities) The books are two kids guidebooks with fun texts and charming illustrations. The collection consist of more than a dozen titles and we´ll try to gain some more titles to our collection.

This Saturday it was our getting-books-day: after visiting the fair we went to visit other  bookshop as we remembered seeing this one book that had stolen my heart since a some time. This is the Taschen´s edition of "Tales of the Brothers Grimm" by Noel Daniel. It is a very special edition bound in cloth and with new illustrations of classics fairy-tales between 1850 and 1950, which are more than two dozen fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. So classic and cool!

Vic finally "found" his book of this summer. (bit late though) "Under the same star" by John Green is according to him a worthy candidate. A short yet ironic novel, with sharpness and dreamy story-telling despite controversial circumstances. Vic has begun to read it and is really excited ... so I'll keep you posted.

"In the country of the white cloud" by Sarah Lark

A couple of days ago I started to read "In the country of the white cloud" by Sarah Lark. Although I have read very little yet I'm really hooked. I think it's an exciting novel. I am anxious to know how the story continues of his two main characters. I'll tell you my impressions when I finish it.

"Tiempo de Arena" by Inma Chacón

After a highly recommended book title: "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton, now I find myself immersed in reading the spanish/latin "Premio Planeta" finalist 2011, "Time of Sand" by Inma Chacon. This is a very easy-to-read and quick novel, very entertaining, that through the lives of three sisters covers topics such as female Freemasonry, the struggle for equality and tradition opposite modernity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I'm going down the middle and my appreciation so far is very good, when it´s finished I will give my final opinion.

"The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton

Today I want to show you this wonderful book that has really captured me. It's "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton. The book brings together all elements of the English romance, full of intrigue, family secrets, a lively style that captures you and will keep you hooked from the first page. So I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy a good time full of intrigue and mystery.

NOTE: A few days ago I finished reading the trilogy "1Q84" by Haruki Murakami and honestly, although the reading was pleasant, fast and interesting, if you ask me now I can`t say what my exact opinion is. Let´s just say that I have "mixed" feelings about it.In my opinion the autor left too many issues unresolved, lot´s of ensolved mysteries and therefore I thought that the end was slightly disappointing from my point of view. A similar controversial feeling that had with the ending of world´s most popular tv serie ever, "Lost".

"1Q84" by Haruki Murakami

A couple of days ago I finished reading "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen. I must say that although at first it was a little hard to read immediately I was hooked on the lives of it´ss leading characters. I liked it, and totally recommend it. For someone like me, a passionate person of historical novels has served as a respite from contemporary flair. But (there's always a but) I mean that although the book I found it really interesting, the end I did not like at all ... it wasn't truly what I expected ... but I will not say any more because I don't want to spoil a future reading for someone.

Today I share one of my latest acquisitions: "1Q84" by Haruki Murakami. After hearing so much about this trilogy and this mainstream author, I finally decided to buy it and start reading them. I only read a couple of chapters but the truth is from the beginning I was intrigued and it continuasly keeps you wanting to know what happens on the next page. I´ll let you know.

Freedom

I heard that "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen is the literary event of the year. I've seen it in magazines, on the web ... so this Saturday taking advantage of our visit to the fnac we bought it. (who could resist?)

For now you must wait at least until the end of the book of which I spoke yesterday - "Habitaciones cerradas" - and that really has me hooked. But I promise to dedicate a post when I've read it.

Another day I'll talk about our irresistible hobby to get lost in the aisles filled with books of the Fnac. ;-)

PS: Today I spent the afternoon with my cousin Mary and I just want to say that I love her!

"Habitaciones cerradas" by Core Santos

Yesterday after lunch I started this book and it`s sufficient to say that when I turned off the light to sleep I was on page 150. The story has captivated me from the beginning ... it hooks, you want to read another page and another to know how it goes ... I know I'll like it and it I'll probably be short.

Let me take this opportunity to recommend that those who have not yet read "El cuaderno de Maya" by Isabel Allende. You will not regret it.

This afternoon after a relaxing siesta on the terrace enjoying the last days of sun and nice weather, I´ve started a new book from writer Isabel Allende called “El cuaderno de Maya”.

I´ve only read a few pages but I already know I like it…this always happens with this writer. 

I love her writing style and the way she tells stories. Lot´s of expectations on this book, I hope that I will not be let down. 

"Prométeme que serás libre" (Promise me you will be free)

I have a real weakness for historic novels. That ´s why when I joined the Readers Club I couldn’t resist to choose “Prométeme que serás libre” from Jorge Molist (“Promise me you will be free”) I didn’t have to much expectations about it but when I started it, it captured me and know I must recognize that I am completely hooked to the story of this guy, who is an apprentice, artilleryman, galley slave, soldier and bookseller…a son of a fisherman who confronted his destiny.
